The Embassy of Azerbaijan held a commemorative event on January 20, 2016 to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the Black January tragedy. The event was attended by Ankara based diplomats of various countries, representatives of media, academic and cultural institutions, students, members of the Azerbaijani diaspora and others. At the outset, the event attendees paid tribute to the Black January martyrs with a moment of silence. Addressing the event Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Turkey, Faig Baghirov informed the participants about the Black January tragedy. He indicated that on January 20, 1990, at the orders of Mikhail Gorbachev and his Politburo hundreds of civilians were killed, including children, women, elderly and a thousand were wounded. During his speech Ambassador Baghirov underlined that Heydar Aliyev, who would later become president and founder of modern Azerbaijan, fiercely denounced the bloodshed and his defiance helped to inspire the Azerbaijani people.
