 Azerbaijan-Turkey relations

Turkey is the first country to recognize Azerbaijan's independence on November 9, 1991 with diplomatic relations established on January 14, 1992.

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Turkey was opened in August 1992. Two General Consulates function in Istanbul and Kars. The Embassy of Turkey in Azerbaijan was established in January 1992 with two Consulates General in Nakhchivan and Ganja.

The expressions “Azerbaijan's joy is our joy, its sorrow is our sorrow” by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey and “We are one nation, two states” by Azerbaijan's National Leader Heydar Aliyev are the thoughts defining the philosophy of Azerbaijan-Turkey relations. Brotherly relations with deep historical roots are continuously developing in all areas with mutual high-level visits on top of it. Regular meetings of the Azerbaijan-Turkey High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council take place since signing of the Joint Declaration in 2010. 216 bilateral documents cover all areas of cooperation.

Today, further strengthening this strategic alliance is a foreign policy priority for Azerbaijan also aimed at contributing to regional and global security.

Global economic projects, especially Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipelines contribute to peace, security and welfare in the region. Another project of continental importance Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, a vital part of the "New Silk Road" transport corridor, commenced its operation with the solemn opening ceremony in Baku on October 30, 2017 with participation of the Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan.

Furthermore, implementation of the Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) gas pipeline project, a major part of the Southern Gas Corridor, will further strengthen the global positioning of the two countries.

Cooperation in trilateral format with participation of Azerbaijan and Turkey separately with Georgia, Iran Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan is another example of strategic and constructive regional engagement.

Turkey is a consistent advocate for the fair position of Azerbaijan regarding the illegal military occupation of its internationally recognized territories by Armenia. Moreover, tradition of mutual support in all matters in the framework of international organizations is successfully going on.
